School uniforms contain harmful substances

Inspected 20 school uniforms in 16 cities across the country, and detected reproductive toxicity and various quality problems.

Of the 20 school uniforms sent by parents, 11 were unqualified. Five of them were found to exceed the standard for phthalates in accordance with EU standards. One of the school uniforms exceeded the standard by nearly 200 times.

1)The problem of o-benzene exceeding the standard

Standard: 0.1% limit of EU REACH regulation

There are 5 school uniforms with varying degrees of over-standard problems. Among them, 4 styles with the button at the neckline of the school uniforms exceed the standard, and the transparent plastic handle exceeds the standard with 1 model. This one is nearly 200 times exceeding the standard.

O-benzene has high mobility and is easily released from articles, and can enter the human body through the respiratory tract, digestive tract, skin and other channels. Ortho-benzene is reproductive toxicity, interferes with endocrine, reduces the quantity and quality of male sperm, and can cause testicular cancer in severe cases. Excessive exposure can increase the risk of breast cancer in women, and it will also harm the reproductive system of their future male babies.

2)Excessive pH value of fabric

Standard: GB18401-2010 “National Basic Safety Technical Code for Textile Products”

In accordance with the requirements of category B, the pH value of personal clothing must be between 4.0 and 8.5. In this evaluation, the pH value of a school uniform fabric exceeded the standard.

The normal pH of human skin should be between 5.5 and 7.0, slightly acidic. The pH value is too high, the alkalinity is too high, and the irritation is enhanced. It is easy to cause skin immune disorders and can cause symptoms such as dermatitis and skin itching.

3)The problem of the pungent smell

Standard: GB18401-2010 “National Basic Safety Technical Specifications for Textile Products” and the new national standard GB/T 31888-2015 “School Uniforms for Primary and Secondary School Students” have regulations on odor items.

For such an intuitive and directly judgeable item, one school uniform was judged unqualified due to a pungent odor in this evaluation.

The peculiar smell mainly includes musty smell, high boiling range petroleum smell, aromatic hydrocarbon smell, fishy smell, and so on. It smells uncomfortable, and symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, and chest tightness appear.

4)Fabric pilling problem

Standard: Level 3-4 required by GB/T 31888-2015

In this evaluation, there were 3 fabrics that failed to meet the requirements for pilling.

5)The problem of colorfastness to rubbing of fabric

Standard: GB 31701-2015 “Technical Specification for Safety of Textile Products for Infants and Children”

In this evaluation, one model was found to be unqualified.

Insufficient colorfastness causes clothing to fade easily. One is that it is easy to dye other clothes, and the other is that the dye falls off and can cause skin irritation.

6)The problem of the strength of the sleeve seam

Standard: GB/T31888-2015

As a result, 1 school uniform was found to be unqualified.

This may happen when the children’s sleeves are torn off during running and playing.

7)Fabric fiber composition problem

Standard: GB/T31888-2015

Needless to say, this kind of behavior is obviously to deceive consumers. In this evaluation, there are really two fabrics whose fiber content does not meet the requirements of the national standard. The national standard requires the cotton content to be no less than 35%, two school uniforms under this number.
